Radhabinod Pal

Radhabinod Pal, born on January twenty-seventh, eighteen eighty-six, was a distinguished Indian jurist and university teacher. His career was marked by significant contributions to international law, particularly during his tenure as a member of the United Nations' International Law Commission from nineteen fifty-two to nineteen sixty-six.

Pal is perhaps best known for his role as one of the three Asian judges at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, commonly referred to as the Tokyo Trials. This tribunal was established to address Japanese war crimes committed during the Second World War. In a remarkable display of judicial independence, Pal was the only judge among his peers to submit a judgment declaring all defendants not guilty, a stance that sparked considerable debate and discussion.

His legacy is honored in Japan, where monuments dedicated to him can be found at the Yasukuni Shrine and the Kyoto Ryozen Gokoku Shrine. These memorials reflect the impact of his decisions and the respect he garnered for his principled stand on justice and fairness.
