Radhanath Sikdar, born in January eighteen thirteen, was a prominent Indian mathematician and social reformer whose contributions significantly impacted both science and society. He is most renowned for his groundbreaking achievement in eighteen fifty-two, when he became the first individual to accurately calculate the height of Mount Everest, a feat that would forever change the landscape of geographical exploration.
In addition to his mathematical prowess, Sikdar was an active member of the Young Bengal group, led by the influential Henry Derozio. This association not only fostered his intellectual growth but also aligned him with a movement that sought to challenge societal norms and promote progressive ideas in India.
In eighteen fifty-four, Sikdar, alongside fellow Derozian Peary Chand Mitra, took a significant step towards social reform by founding Masik Patrika, a Bengali journal dedicated to the education of Indian women. This initiative was pivotal in advocating for women's rights and education during a time when such topics were often overlooked.
