Competing for Levski Sofia, he trains under the guidance of the esteemed Simeon Shterev, a former world champion and triple European champion, who has also coached the renowned Stanka Zlateva.

Velikov's career is marked by remarkable achievements, including his victory at the 2006 World Championships held in Guangzhou. He showcased his talent on the international stage by securing a silver medal at the 2005 World Championships in Budapest, as well as a silver at the European Championships in Varna the same year. His prowess continued to shine as he earned a bronze medal at the European Championships in Sofia in two thousand seven.

His Olympic journey began at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where he finished ninth.
