Raffaele Cadorna

Raffaele Cadorna, born on February ninth, eighteen fifteen in Milan, was a prominent Italian general and politician who played a pivotal role in the unification of Italy during the mid-nineteenth century. His military career began when he entered the Piedmontese military academy in Turin in eighteen thirty-two, and he joined the engineer corps in eighteen forty. Cadorna commanded a volunteer engineer battalion in Lombardy during the First Italian War of Independence from March eighteen forty-eight to August eighteen forty-nine.

His military prowess was further demonstrated during the Crimean War in January eighteen fifty-five, where he served with the Piedmontese forces. Cadorna distinguished himself in the Second War of Independence, particularly at the Battle of San Martino, earning the rank of Colonel in eighteen fifty-nine. That same year, he was appointed Minister of War for the republican regime of Tuscany, showcasing his leadership and strategic capabilities.

In the Austro-Prussian War, Cadorna served as a lieutenant general and corps commander, leading successful operations against Austrian forces from June to July eighteen sixty-six. His most notable achievement came in eighteen seventy when he led the invasion of the Papal States, culminating in the capture of Rome on September twentieth, which marked a significant milestone in the unification of Italy. For his contributions, he was named a Senator the following year.

After retiring from public life, Cadorna settled in Tuscany, where he lived until his death in eighteen ninety-seven. His legacy continued through his family, as his son, Luigi Cadorna, rose to the rank of Field Marshal and served as the Italian chief of staff during part of World War I. Additionally, his grandson, Raffaele Cadorna Jr., became a general and commander of the Italian resistance during World War II.
