Rafi ud-Darajat, born on December first, sixteen ninety-nine, was a brief yet notable figure in the Mughal Empire, serving as its Eleventh emperor. He was the youngest son of Rafi-ush-Shan and a grandson of Bahadur Shah I, which positioned him within a significant lineage of Mughal rulers.

His ascent to the throne in 1719 was marked by political intrigue and upheaval. The Sayyid brothers, influential power brokers of the time, orchestrated his rise after they deposed the reigning emperor, Farrukhsiyar. This coup was executed with the assistance of Maharaja Ajit Singh and the Marathas, showcasing the complex interplay of alliances and rivalries that characterized the era.
