Her journey began when she was detained by Thai authorities on January fifth, two thousand nineteen, while transiting through Bangkok on her way to Australia, where she intended to seek asylum.

Facing threats from her family due to her decision to leave Islam, an act punishable by death under Saudi law, Rahaf's situation garnered international attention. After appealing for help on Twitter, her plight resonated with many, leading Thai authorities to reconsider their initial plans to forcibly return her to Kuwait, from where she would have been sent back to Saudi Arabia.

Under the protection of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Rahaf was granted refugee status. On January eleventh, two thousand nineteen, she was granted asylum in Canada, arriving in Toronto the following day.
