Ralph P. Martin

Ralph P. Martin, born on August 4, 1925, in Anfield, Liverpool, England, was a distinguished British New Testament scholar and theologian. His academic journey began at the Liverpool Collegiate School, followed by studies at the University of Manchester and King's College London. Martin's passion for biblical scholarship led him to teach at several esteemed institutions, including the London Bible College, the University of Manchester, the University of Sheffield, Azusa Pacific University, and Fuller Theological Seminary.

After training for the Baptist ministry at Manchester Baptist College, Martin was ordained in 1949. He dedicated a decade to pastoral work before transitioning into academia. His teaching career in England spanned ten years before he moved to Fuller Theological Seminary in California, where he spent nearly twenty years. In 1988, he returned to England, continuing his influential work in biblical studies.

During his time in the United States, Martin authored numerous books on the New Testament and edited several others, contributing significantly to the field. His commentaries on the books of Mark, Romans, Philippians, and James are particularly noteworthy, showcasing his expertise and insight into the New Testament.

In recognition of his contributions to theology, a Festschrift titled 'Worship, Theology and Ministry in the Early Church: Essays in Honor of Ralph P. Martin' was published in 1992. This collection featured essays from prominent scholars such as James Dunn, E. Earle Ellis, Donald Guthrie, I. Howard Marshall, and Leon Morris, celebrating Martin's impact on the study of early Christian theology.
