Ram Vilas Paswan

Ram Vilas Paswan, born on July fifth, nineteen forty-six, was a prominent Indian politician hailing from Bihar. He served as the Cabinet Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in both the first and second Modi ministries. As the president of the Lok Janshakti Party, he was a significant figure in Indian politics, having been elected to the Lok Sabha nine times and serving two terms in the Rajya Sabha.

Paswan's political journey began in nineteen sixty-nine when he was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly as a member of the Samyukta Socialist Party. He joined the Lok Dal in nineteen seventy-four, quickly rising to the position of general secretary. A staunch opponent of the Emergency, he faced arrest during this tumultuous period. His first election to the Lok Sabha came in nineteen seventy-seven as a member of the Janata Party, representing the Hajipur constituency. He continued to secure his position in subsequent elections held in nineteen eighty, nineteen eighty-nine, nineteen ninety-one (from Rosera), nineteen ninety-six, nineteen ninety-eight, nineteen ninety-nine, two thousand four, and two thousand fourteen.

In two thousand, Paswan founded the Lok Janshakti Party, taking on the role of its president. His political acumen led him to join the ruling United Progressive Alliance government in two thousand four, where he held ministerial roles in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and the Ministry of Steel. Known for his adaptability, he held cabinet positions under seven different governments, earning him the reputation of being the weatherman of Indian politics.

Paswan's contributions to Indian society were recognized posthumously when he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honor, in twenty twenty-one. As of twenty twenty-four, he remains the longest-serving Union minister not affiliated with the Indian National Congress, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence Indian politics.
