Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Rama III

Nangklao, known posthumously as Rama III, was born on March thirty-first, seventeen eighty-eight, and ascended to the throne of Rattanakosin in eighteen twenty-four. As the eldest surviving son of King Rama II and his secondary wife Sri Sulalai, Nangklao's rise to power was smooth and uncontested, confirmed by the grand council. However, foreign observers mistakenly viewed his accession as a usurpation of his younger half-brother Prince Mongkut's claim, a misconception rooted in differing cultural interpretations of legitimacy.

During his reign, which lasted until his death in eighteen fifty-one, Rama III was instrumental in initiating Siam's first cautious engagements with Western powers. His leadership marked a significant period in the kingdom's history, as Siam's territory reached its greatest extent. He is often celebrated for strengthening the tax-farming system, which became a reliable source of revenue, and for his role in liberalizing foreign trade through the Burney Treaty of eighteen twenty-six.

Rama III's contributions to trade and economic development earned him the title of 'the father of Thai commerce.' His military prowess was equally notable; he successfully suppressed the Laotian Rebellion from eighteen twenty-six to eighteen twenty-eight and triumphed in the Siamese–Vietnamese War from eighteen thirty-one to eighteen thirty-four, followed by a campaign in Cambodia from eighteen forty-one to eighteen forty-five. These achievements solidified Siam's regional dominance and showcased his capabilities as a sovereign and military officer.
