Ramadan al-Bouti

Ramadan al-Bouti, born in 1929, was a distinguished Syrian Sunni Muslim scholar whose contributions to Islamic thought have left a lasting impact. He served as a professor and vice dean at Damascus University, where he also held the esteemed position of imam at the Umayyad Mosque. His academic and spiritual leadership positioned him as a pivotal figure in the landscape of contemporary Islamic scholarship.

Throughout his prolific career, al-Bouti authored over sixty books that delved into Islamic law and theology. His writings are celebrated for their robust defense of Sunni Islam, particularly against the challenges posed by secularism, Marxism, nationalism, and various reformist movements, including Wahhabism and Islamic Modernism. Al-Bouti's adherence to the four schools of thought in Sunni Islam and the orthodox Ash'arite creed marked him as a leading figure of Islamic neo-traditionalism.

Tragically, on 21 March 2013, al-Bouti's life was cut short when he was assassinated at the Al-Iman Mosque in Damascus. The circumstances surrounding his death remain shrouded in uncertainty, adding a layer of complexity to his legacy as a scholar and a leader.
