Ramón Emeterio Betances

Ramón Emeterio Betances, born on April eighth, eighteen twenty-seven, was a multifaceted Puerto Rican figure whose contributions spanned various fields, including medicine, diplomacy, and literature. He is best known as a pivotal leader in the Puerto Rican independence movement, where he played a crucial role in instigating the Grito de Lares revolt and designing the Lares flag, symbols of the quest for freedom.

As a medical doctor and surgeon, Betances established a successful practice in Puerto Rico, becoming one of the island's first social hygienists. His dedication to public health and his charitable efforts earned him the affectionate title of El Médico de los Pobres, or The Doctor of the Poor, reflecting his commitment to serving those in need.
