Ramon Llull

Ramon Llull, born around 1232 in Palma de Majorca, was a multifaceted figure in the realms of philosophy, theology, and literature. As a Catholic philosopher and theologian, he developed a unique philosophical system known as the Art, which aimed to establish a universal logic to validate Christian doctrine across diverse faiths and cultures. This innovative approach was characterized by a series of general principles and combinatorial operations, often illustrated through diagrams.

A prolific writer, Llull composed numerous works in Catalan, striving to make his philosophical ideas accessible to a broader audience. His literary contributions extended beyond Catalan and Latin, with indications that he may have also written in Arabic, although no surviving texts in that language exist. During his lifetime, his works were translated into Occitan, French, and Castilian, reflecting their impact and reach.

Despite not achieving widespread acclaim during his lifetime, Llull's legacy has endured, with his ideas gaining recognition in various fields. In the early modern period, his name became linked to alchemical literature, while contemporary scholars have acknowledged him as a precursor to social choice theory, predating significant developments in the field by several centuries. His thoughts also foreshadowed advancements in computation theory.

Venerated as a saintly figure within the Catholic Church, Ramon Llull was beatified by Pope Pius IX in eighteen forty-seven. He was also a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis, further emphasizing his commitment to his faith and mission.
