Ramsewak Shankar

Ramsewak Shankar, born on November sixth, nineteen thirty-seven, is a notable Surinamese politician who made significant contributions to his country's political landscape. He served as the fourth President of Suriname from nineteen eighty-eight to nineteen ninety, a period marked by his commitment to governance and public service.

Before ascending to the presidency, Shankar held the position of Agriculture and Fisheries Minister from nineteen sixty-nine to nineteen seventy-one. His tenure in this role laid the groundwork for his later political endeavors and showcased his dedication to the agricultural sector, which is vital to Suriname's economy.

Shankar is a prominent figure within the large ethnic South Asian community in Suriname. His academic journey took him to Wageningen University in the Netherlands, where he honed his skills and knowledge. Upon returning to Suriname, he became actively involved in the Progressive Reform Party, advocating for the country's independence in nineteen seventy-five.

His presidency, however, came to an abrupt end when Dési Bouterse led a bloodless military coup, resulting in Shankar's ousting. Despite this setback, his legacy as a dedicated public servant and advocate for his community remains significant in Suriname's history.
