Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis Jr., born on May 27, 1935, was a celebrated American jazz pianist, composer, and radio personality. Over his illustrious career, he recorded more than eighty albums, earning five gold records and three Grammy Awards. His album, The In Crowd, not only garnered critical acclaim but also won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance in nineteen sixty-five.
Lewis is perhaps best known for his iconic singles, including "The 'In' Crowd," "Wade in the Water," and "Sun Goddess." His contributions to the jazz genre have left an indelible mark, showcasing his exceptional talent and creativity as a musician.
In addition to his musical achievements, Lewis was deeply committed to music education in Chicago. He founded the Ramsey Lewis Foundation and established Ravinia's Jazz Mentor Program, demonstrating his dedication to nurturing the next generation of musicians. He also served on the board of trustees for the Merit School of Music and The Chicago High School for the Arts.
Until two thousand nine, Lewis was the beloved host of the Ramsey Lewis Morning Show on the Chicago radio station WNUA, where he shared his passion for music with listeners across the city.
