Raphael Semmes

Raphael Semmes, born on September twenty-seventh, eighteen oh nine, was a distinguished military officer, lawyer, and judge. His career began in the United States Navy, where he served from eighteen twenty-six until eighteen sixty, gaining invaluable experience that would later shape his role in the Confederate Navy during the tumultuous years of the American Civil War.

As captain of the CSS Alabama, Semmes commanded one of the most formidable commerce raiders in maritime history. Under his leadership, the Alabama captured sixty-five prizes, showcasing his strategic prowess and naval acumen. His contributions to naval warfare during this period were significant, earning him a reputation that would endure long after the war.

In recognition of his service, Semmes was promoted to rear admiral late in the conflict. Additionally, he briefly held the title of brigadier general in the Confederate States Army from April fifth to April twenty-sixth, eighteen sixty-five, although this appointment was never formally confirmed by the Confederate Senate.
