Raquel Rastenni

Raquel Rastenni, born Anna Rachel Rastén on August 21, 1915, in Copenhagen, was a remarkable Danish-Russian singer whose career spanned several decades. Growing up in a modest apartment in a less affluent part of the city, she was the daughter of Jewish immigrants from Russia. Her father worked as a tailor, while her mother was a seamstress, instilling in her a strong work ethic from an early age.

Rastenni began her artistic journey as a dancer in the Helsingør Revue in 1936, but it was her debut as a singer in 1938 that truly set her on the path to fame. She quickly gained recognition, performing with various orchestras throughout the early 1940s and forming her own swing trio in 1940. That same year marked the release of her first record, and she began touring in Sweden, where her talent flourished.

In October 1943, as Nazi occupation loomed over Denmark, Rastenni and her family fled to Sweden. During the war years, she continued to thrive, performing in cabarets and with orchestras, her jazz style drawing comparisons to the legendary Ella Fitzgerald. After returning to Denmark in 1945, she emerged as the country's leading female ballad singer, achieving significant success with hits like Vovsen i vinduet in 1953 and Heksedansen in 1960. Her best-selling song, Hele ugen alene, sold over one hundred twenty thousand copies, making her the first artist in Denmark to earn a gold record.

Rastenni's versatility extended beyond Danish, as she recorded songs in Swedish, Yiddish, and Hebrew. She represented Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958 with the song Jeg rev et blad ud af min Dagbog, finishing in eighth place. She later participated in the Danish Melodi Grand Prix again, performing a duet with Grethe Sønck.

After a vibrant career, Raquel Rastenni retired from public life in the late 1980s. She passed away on August 17, 1998, in Skodsborg, leaving behind a legacy as one of Denmark's most beloved singers.
