Rashid al-Din Hamadani

Rashid al-Din Hamadani, born in the year twelve forty-seven, emerged as a prominent statesman, historian, and physician during the Ilkhanate period in Iran. His journey took a significant turn when he converted to Islam from Judaism at the age of thirty in twelve seventy-seven, which paved the way for his rise to power as the vizier of Ilkhan Ghazan.

Commissioned by Ghazan, Rashid al-Din authored the Jāmiʿ al-Tawārīkh, a monumental work that is now regarded as the most crucial single source for understanding the history of the Ilkhanate and the Mongol Empire. His tenure as vizier lasted until the year thirteen sixteen, during which he played a vital role in the administration and cultural life of the region.

Despite his significant contributions, Rashid al-Din's life ended tragically when he was charged with the poisoning of the Ilkhanid king Öljaitü and subsequently executed in thirteen eighteen. Historian Morris Rossabi has described him as arguably the most distinguished figure in Persia during the Mongolian rule, highlighting his profound impact on the historical narrative of the time.

In addition to his political and historical endeavors, Rashid al-Din was a prolific author and established the Rab'-e Rashidi academic foundation in Tabriz, further solidifying his legacy as a key figure in the intellectual landscape of his era.
