As the son of Naval Tata, who was adopted by Ratanji Tata, the lineage traces back to Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group. Ratan Tata graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture from Cornell University College of Architecture and further honed his business acumen by attending the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program in nineteen seventy-five.
Joining the Tata Group in nineteen sixty-two, Tata began his career on the shop floor of Tata Steel.
