Raül Romeva, born on March twelfth, nineteen seventy-one, is a prominent Catalan politician, university teacher, essayist, analyst, and casteller. He has made significant contributions to the political landscape of Catalonia and Spain, particularly as a former Member of the European Parliament representing Iniciativa per Catalunya Verds, a member of the European Greens.
In the European Parliament, Romeva was an active member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. His political journey took a pivotal turn in the Catalan parliamentary election of two thousand fifteen when he led the pro-Catalan independence electoral list, Junts pel Sí, advocating for the region's autonomy.
On January fourteenth, two thousand sixteen, he was appointed Minister for External and Institutional Relations, and Transparency in the Catalan Regional Government under President Carles Puigdemont. However, his tenure was abruptly halted on October twenty-seventh, two thousand seventeen, when the Spanish government invoked article one hundred fifty-five of the constitution during the Catalan crisis.
Romeva faced significant challenges during his political career, spending nearly four years in prison from two thousand seventeen to two thousand twenty-one. In two thousand nineteen, he was sentenced to twelve years in prison for sedition alongside other members of Puigdemont's government. Fortunately, he was pardoned in two thousand twenty-one, leading to his release from prison.
