Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin, born on 17 September 1986, is a distinguished Indian cricketer renowned for his exceptional skills as a right-arm off-spin bowler and lower-order batter. He has made a significant mark in the world of cricket, being widely regarded as one of the most prolific spinners in the sport's history. Ashwin has represented the Indian cricket team in numerous international matches, contributing to the team's triumphs in the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

With over five hundred wickets in Test cricket, Ashwin holds the record for being the fastest bowler to reach three hundred Test wickets in terms of innings. His remarkable achievements include winning eleven Man of the Series awards in Tests, a record he shares with the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan. As an all-rounder, he has scored six Test centuries and is among the elite trio of players to have amassed three thousand runs while taking five hundred wickets in Tests.

Ashwin's cricketing journey began as an opening batsman, but he transitioned to an off-break bowler after limited success. He made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in December two thousand six and captained the team the following season. His impressive performances in the Indian Premier League with the Chennai Super Kings led to his maiden international call-up in June two thousand ten. He was instrumental in CSK's victories in the Champions League Twenty20 and the IPL, showcasing his economical bowling and wicket-taking abilities.

His Test debut came in 2011 against the West Indies, where he became the seventh Indian bowler to achieve a five-wicket haul on debut. Ashwin's prowess on turning tracks has been evident, particularly during a series against Australia where he took twenty-nine wickets, the highest by any Indian bowler in a four-match Test series. His accolades include the ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year awards for 2016, along with multiple selections to the ICC Men's Test Team of the Year.

In recognition of his contributions to cricket, Ashwin was awarded the Arjuna Award by the Government of India in 2015. He announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket on 18 December 2024, and in January 2025, he received the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, further solidifying his legacy in the sport.
