Ray Jayawardhana

Ray Jayawardhana is a distinguished Sri Lankan astrophysicist and science communicator, known for his significant contributions to the field of astronomy. With a career marked by academic excellence, he has held prominent positions at several prestigious institutions, showcasing his expertise and leadership in the scientific community.

Currently, Ray is set to take on the role of president at the California Institute of Technology, beginning his term on July first, two thousand twenty-six. This appointment reflects his remarkable journey and the respect he has garnered in the academic world.

Before this upcoming role, he served as the provost and professor of physics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins University. His previous tenure as the Harold Tanner Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University further highlights his commitment to education and research, where he also held the title of Professor of Astronomy and Hans A. Bethe Professor.
