Ray Lumpp

Ray Lumpp, born on July 11, 1923, in Brooklyn, New York, was an accomplished American professional basketball player whose career spanned from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. Growing up in Queens, he honed his skills on the court and went on to play college basketball for New York University. Lumpp was a key player on the team that reached the finals of the 1948 NIT tournament, showcasing his talent and determination.

In 1948, Lumpp represented the United States at the Summer Olympics, where he was part of the men's basketball team that clinched the gold medal. This achievement marked a significant highlight in his athletic career, further solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the sport.

From 1948 to 1953, Lumpp played professionally in the NBA, donning the jerseys of the New York Knicks, Indianapolis Jets, and Baltimore Bullets. After retiring from professional basketball, Lumpp transitioned into a role as the athletic director of the New York Athletic Club, where he organized the club's annual track and field meet during the 1960s. He also played a pivotal role in establishing the Vitalis Olympic Invitational indoor meet held at the Meadowlands, contributing to the promotion of athletics beyond his playing days.
