Raymond Washington

Raymond Washington, born on August 14, 1953, was a notable figure in the world of organized crime, recognized as the founder of the infamous Crips gang in Los Angeles. Emerging in the late 1960s, Washington initially established the Crips as a minor street gang in South Los Angeles, but his ambitions quickly propelled him to become a significant local crime boss.

In 1971, Washington formed a pivotal alliance with Stanley 'Tookie' Williams, which solidified the Crips' status as the first major African-American street gang in Los Angeles. Together, they served as co-leaders, shaping the gang's identity and influence during a transformative period in the city's history.

However, Washington's reign faced challenges when he was convicted of robbery in 1974, resulting in a five-year prison sentence. This incarceration marked a decline in his leadership and influence within the Crips, as the gang continued to evolve in his absence.

Tragically, on August 9, 1979, Raymond Washington's life was cut short when he was murdered in a drive-by shooting shortly after his release from prison. His legacy remains a complex chapter in the narrative of gang culture in Los Angeles.
