Razan Zaitouneh

Razan Zaitouneh, born on April twenty-ninth, nineteen seventy-seven, is a prominent Syrian human rights lawyer and civil society activist. Her unwavering commitment to justice and human rights has made her a significant figure in the ongoing struggle for freedom in Syria. Zaitouneh's work has been instrumental in documenting human rights violations through her involvement with the Local Coordination Committees of Syria.

As the Syrian uprising gained momentum, Zaitouneh became increasingly active, advocating for the rights of those affected by the conflict. However, her activism came at a great personal cost. Following accusations from the government labeling her a foreign agent, she was forced into hiding, particularly after her husband was arrested, highlighting the dangers faced by those who stand up for human rights in oppressive regimes.

Tragically, on December ninth, two thousand thirteen, Zaitouneh was kidnapped, with strong indications pointing to the involvement of the militant group Jaysh al-Islam. Since that fateful day, her fate has remained shrouded in uncertainty, with fears that she may have been killed. Despite the risks, her legacy as a defender of human rights continues to inspire many.
