Rechelle Hawkes

Rechelle Hawkes, born on May 30, 1967, is a celebrated former Australian field hockey player who made an indelible mark on the sport. As the captain of the Australian Women's Hockey Team, known as the Hockeyroos, she led her team for eight remarkable years, showcasing her leadership and skill on the international stage.

Hawkes achieved a historic milestone by becoming the second Australian woman, following the legendary swimmer Dawn Fraser, to secure three Olympic gold medals across three different Olympic Games. Her Olympic journey includes triumphs at Seoul in nineteen eighty-eight, Atlanta in nineteen ninety-six, and Sydney in two thousand. Additionally, she represented Australia at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, where the team finished fifth.

Making her debut in nineteen eighty-five, Hawkes reached a significant career milestone in nineteen ninety-nine, celebrating her two hundred and fifty games for the national team. Her contributions to the sport were further recognized when she had the honor of reading the Athlete's Olympic Oath at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Throughout her illustrious career, Hawkes received numerous accolades, including the Medal of the Order of Australia in nineteen eighty-nine, an Australian Sports Medal in two thousand, and a Centenary Medal in two thousand one. In two thousand one, she was inducted into the Australian Institute of Sport's 'Best of the Best' and later into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in two thousand two.

In recognition of her significant contributions to hockey, particularly as a national captain of multiple tournament-winning teams, Hawkes was honored as a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2018 Australia Day Honours.
