Rechila

Rechila, the Suevic king of Galicia, ascended to the throne in the year four hundred thirty-eight, following the retirement of his ailing father, Hermeric. This transition marked the beginning of a significant era for the Suevic kingdom as Rechila sought to expand its territories amidst the power vacuum left by the retreating Vandals and Alans.

In his quest for expansion, Rechila achieved notable military victories, including a decisive defeat of Andevotus, the comes Hispaniarum, on the banks of the river Genil. His reign was characterized by near-constant conflict with the Romans, culminating in the capture of the Roman legate Censorius near Mértola during his third embassy to the Suevi.

Rechila's military campaigns led to the conquest of key provincial capitals, including Mérida in four hundred thirty-nine and Seville in four hundred forty-one. These victories were pivotal, as they solidified Suevic control over the provinces of Lusitania, Baetica, and Carthaginiensis, although the Levante and Mediterranean seaboard remained outside their grasp.

Despite his successes, Rechila's life ended in Mérida, where he died a pagan, as chronicled by Hydatius. This detail was later echoed by Isidore of Seville, who noted the uncertainty surrounding Rechila's faith at the time of his death. His legacy continued through his son, Rechiar, who embraced Catholicism, possibly as a strategic move to strengthen ties with the Church.

There is speculation regarding Rechila's familial connections, with some scholars suggesting he may have been the father or uncle of the influential magister militum Ricimer. This connection further emphasizes the intricate web of power and influence during a tumultuous period in Iberian history.
