Red Cloud

Red Cloud, born in 1822, emerged as a prominent leader of the Oglala Lakota from 1865 until his passing in 1909. Renowned for his strategic prowess, he became one of the most formidable Native American adversaries faced by the United States Army in the western territories. His leadership during Red Cloud's War was pivotal, culminating in a significant victory that established the Lakota as the only nation to defeat the United States on American soil.

The most notable engagement of this conflict was the Fetterman Fight in 1866, where eighty-one U.S. soldiers lost their lives. This battle marked the worst military defeat for the U.S. Army on the Great Plains until the infamous Battle of the Little Bighorn a decade later. Red Cloud's tactical acumen and ability to unite his people were instrumental in achieving this remarkable feat.

Following the signing of the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868, Red Cloud guided his people through the challenging transition to reservation life. While some viewed him as the overarching leader of the Sioux tribes, which included the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota, the reality was that the Sioux were a highly decentralized group with various major divisions. Within this complex social structure, bands among the Oglala and other divisions often operated independently, yet Red Cloud's reputation as a respected warrior and leader remained unchallenged.
