Red Jacket

Red Jacket, born circa 1750, was a prominent Seneca orator and chief of the Wolf clan, whose influence was felt across Western New York. His leadership emerged during a tumultuous period following the American Revolutionary War, when the Seneca, having allied with the British, faced significant territorial losses. Despite these challenges, Red Jacket played a crucial role in negotiating with the newly formed United States, advocating for the rights and lands of his people.

One of his notable achievements was signing the Treaty of Canandaigua in 1794, which helped secure some Seneca territory in New York state. This was particularly significant as many of his people had already migrated to Canada for resettlement after the Paris Treaty.
