Reginald Dyer

Reginald Dyer, born on October ninth, eighteen sixty-four, was a notable British military officer who served in the Bengal Army and later in the British Indian Army. His military journey commenced in the regular British Army, but he soon transitioned to the presidency armies of India, where he would leave a controversial legacy.

As a temporary brigadier-general, Dyer is infamously remembered for his role in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre that occurred on April thirteenth, nineteen nineteen, in Amritsar, Punjab. His order to open fire on a large assembly of civilians resulted in the tragic loss of at least three hundred seventy-nine lives, with many more injured. The official inquiry into the incident suggested that the actual death toll could have been even higher.

Following the massacre, Dyer participated in the Third Anglo-Afghan War, where he played a significant role in lifting the siege at Thal and inflicted considerable casualties on Afghan forces. Despite his military accomplishments, Dyer's actions during the Jallianwala Bagh incident led to widespread condemnation in both Britain and India.

Ultimately, Dyer resigned from his position, yet he garnered a mixed legacy; while he faced severe criticism for his actions, he was also celebrated as a hero by some factions connected to the British Raj.
