Reidar Liaklev

Reidar Liaklev, born on July fifteenth, nineteen seventeen, was a distinguished speed skater hailing from Norway. He made a significant mark in the world of long-distance speed skating, particularly with his remarkable performance at the 1948 Winter Olympics, where he clinched the gold medal in the 5000 m event.

Liaklev's journey in competitive skating began early, as he secured a bronze medal at the junior Norwegian Championships in nineteen thirty-nine. However, like many athletes of his era, his career faced interruptions due to World War II. His return to international competition was marked by the 1947 World Allround Championships, where he showcased his talent by finishing third in the 5000 m, winning the 10,000 m event, and placing fourth overall.

In February nineteen forty-eight, during the first Winter Olympics post-war, Liaklev achieved a remarkable feat by winning the 5000 m with a time of eight minutes and twenty-nine point four seconds. Although he participated in the 10,000 m, he was unable to finish due to breathing difficulties at high altitudes. Shortly after, he triumphed at the European Championships in Hamar, further solidifying his status as a top competitor.

In nineteen forty-nine, he was crowned the Norwegian Allround Champion, and the following year, he earned a silver medal at the European Allround Championships in Helsinki, where he also won the 10,000 m event. Throughout his career, Liaklev represented Brandbu Idrettsforening, a testament to his dedication to the sport.

After retiring around nineteen fifty, Liaklev transitioned into coaching, contributing to the sport as a member of the Norwegian Skating Association board. Beyond skating, he served as a postmaster and beekeeper in his hometown of Jaren, and actively participated in the community council, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the ice.
