Her debut novel, Buitenstaanders, was published in nineteen eighty-three, a poignant reflection of her life experiences, particularly the profound impact of her sister's tragic suicide on her writing.

In recognition of her extensive body of work, Dorrestein was awarded the Annie Romein prize in nineteen ninety-three. Her novels resonated with readers across the globe, leading to translations in fourteen countries, further solidifying her status as a significant literary figure.
