René Clément

René Clément, born on March 18, 1913, was a prominent French film director and screenwriter whose career spanned from the 1930s to the 1970s. Renowned for his contributions to cinema, he emerged as one of France's leading filmmakers in the post-World War II era, continuing to make significant strides during the New Wave movement.

Throughout his illustrious career, Clément garnered five prestigious awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including two for Best Director, making him the most-awarded French filmmaker in the festival's history. His films, such as The Walls of Malapaga (1949) and Forbidden Games (1952), not only captivated audiences but also earned the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Among his other notable works are Gervaise (1956), Purple Noon (1960), Is Paris Burning (1966), Rider on the Rain (1970), and And Hope to Die (1972). In recognition of his remarkable contributions to the film industry, he received the Honorary César in 1984.

In addition to his filmmaking achievements, Clément played a vital role in the cinematic community as a co-founder and President of the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques, as well as serving as President of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
