At the young age of twenty-one, he etched his name in Olympic history by clinching the gold medal at the Sydney 2000 Games, achieving a remarkable time of eight minutes and twenty-one point forty-three seconds.

His athletic journey continued to flourish as he represented Kenya at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, where he secured a bronze medal in the steeplechase event. Kosgei ventured into marathon running, making his debut at the 2009 Vienna Marathon, although he did not finish. However, he showcased his talent by finishing second at the 2009 Florence Marathon.

A frequent visitor to Australia, Kosgei's achievements include winning the 2009 Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon with a time of sixty-four minutes and eighteen seconds.
