Rex Cawley

Rex Cawley, born on July 6, 1940, in Highland Park, Michigan, was a distinguished American athlete renowned for his prowess in the 400 m hurdles. His athletic journey began at Farmington High School, where he made a significant mark by setting the record for the 100 yard dash in 1959, a record that still stands today. His exceptional talent earned him the title of Track and Field News 'High School Athlete of the Year' in the same year.

As a student at the University of Southern California, Cawley continued to excel, clinching the NCAA title in the 440 yard hurdles in 1963. His dominance in the sport was further highlighted by his victories at the AAU championships in 440-yard hurdles in both 1963 and 1965. Cawley's remarkable performance at the Olympic Trials in 1964 saw him set a world record in the 400 m hurdles with a time of forty-nine point one seconds, establishing him as a favorite for the upcoming Olympic Games.

At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Cawley delivered a commanding performance, securing the gold medal by defeating his closest rival, John Cooper from Great Britain, by a margin of half a second. His achievements did not end there; he also won the British AAA Championships title in the 440 yards hurdles at the 1965 AAA Championships, further solidifying his legacy in athletics.

Rex Cawley's life came to a close on January 21, 2022, at the age of eighty-one. His contributions to the world of athletics and his remarkable achievements continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
