Riad al-Asaad

Riad al-Asaad, born in 1961, is a notable Syrian military officer and politician recognized as the founding leader of the Free Syrian Army (FSA). His leadership emerged prominently during the early stages of the Syrian Civil War, where he took on the role of commander-in-chief of the FSA, spearheading the armed resistance against the Assad regime.

Under al-Asaad's command, the FSA transformed into a formidable paramilitary force, boasting approximately seventy-five thousand guerilla fighters and insurgents by March 2012. This expansion positioned the FSA as a significant threat to regime forces, particularly in Damascus, showcasing al-Asaad's strategic military capabilities.

In July 2011, al-Asaad made a pivotal decision to defect from the Syrian Air Force, where he held the rank of colonel, to join the opposition. This courageous move marked the beginning of his influential role in the Syrian resistance, ultimately leading him to become the first Acting Commander-in-chief of the Free Syrian Army.

Currently, Riad al-Asaad serves as the deputy prime minister for Military Affairs of the Syrian Salvation Government, a position he has held since November second, two thousand seventeen. His commitment to the cause is further underscored by the personal sacrifices he has endured, including the execution of some family members at the hands of the Assad regime.
