Ricardo Rodríguez (racing driver)

Ricardo Rodríguez, born on February 14, 1942, was a pioneering Mexican racing driver who made history as the first from his country to compete in a Formula One Grand Prix. His remarkable journey began in the 1961 season, where he showcased his talent at the Italian Grand Prix, racing for the prestigious Ferrari team.

At just 19 years and 208 days old, Rodríguez became the youngest driver to race for Ferrari, a record that stood until it was surpassed in 2024. His debut at the Italian Grand Prix also marked him as the youngest driver to start a Formula One race, a title he held until the 1980 Canadian Grand Prix. Furthermore, he was the youngest driver to start from the first row until the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix.

In the 1962 Belgian Grand Prix, Rodríguez achieved another milestone by becoming the youngest driver to score points in Formula One, a record that remained until the 2000 Brazilian Grand Prix. Tragically, his promising career was cut short when he died at the age of twenty during a practice session for the 1962 Mexican Grand Prix, making him the youngest driver to lose his life in the sport.

Ricardo's legacy is further enriched by his elder brother, Pedro Rodríguez, who was also a celebrated racing driver. Pedro achieved significant success in both sports car racing and Formula One, including a season with Ferrari in 1969, before his untimely death in a crash during a sportscar race in 1971.
