Richard Chase, born on May 23, 1950, was an infamous American serial killer whose heinous acts earned him the monikers the Vampire of Sacramento, the Dracula Killer, and the Vampire Killer. Between December 1977 and January 1978, Chase committed a series of brutal murders in Sacramento, California, claiming the lives of six individuals. His selection of victims was random, and his first murder was executed in a drive-by shooting, while the others were carried out within the sanctity of their own homes.
The motivations behind Chase's gruesome acts were deeply disturbing. He engaged in the mutilation of his victims' bodies and exhibited a chilling desire to consume their blood and organs. This grotesque behavior stemmed from his delusional belief that he needed to ingest the blood of others to sustain his own life force. The nature of these crimes was so shocking that a senior investigator from the Sacramento Police Department described them as the most grotesque slayings he had encountered in his nearly three-decade career.
Chase was ultimately tried and convicted on six counts of first-degree murder. On May 8, 1979, he was sentenced to death, with the jury determining that he was legally sane at the time of his crimes. However, his life came to a tragic end on December 26, 1980, when he died from an overdose of Sinequan, which was ruled an apparent suicide.
