Richard Cromwell

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Richard Cromwell

Richard Cromwell, born on October fourth, sixteen twenty-six, was an English statesman who ascended to the role of Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland following the death of his father, Oliver Cromwell, in sixteen fifty-eight. His tenure, however, was marked by a lack of authority and significant challenges.

Upon taking office, Richard sought to bridge the divide between the military and civil society, allowing a Parliament that included many disaffected Presbyterians and Royalists to convene. This decision, however, led to rising tensions, particularly when suspicions grew that civilian councillors aimed to undermine the army's influence. The situation escalated when the army demonstrated its power against Richard, leading to a period where he may have been detained.

Despite his efforts, Richard's rule was short-lived; he formally renounced his position just nine months after assuming it. The political landscape shifted dramatically when a Royalist revolt was quelled by General John Lambert, who then prevented the Rump Parliament from reconvening and established a Committee of Safety. However, Lambert's forces dwindled in the face of General George Monck's advance from Scotland, which ultimately led to the Restoration in sixteen sixty.

Following his resignation, Richard Cromwell went into exile on the Continent, where he lived in relative obscurity for the remainder of his life. He eventually returned to his English estate and passed away thirty years later at the age of eighty-five.
