Richard I of Normandy

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Richard I of Normandy

Richard I of Normandy, born on the twenty-eighth of August in the year nine hundred thirty-two, is often remembered as Richard the Fearless. His reign as the count of Rouen spanned from nine hundred forty-two until his death in nine hundred ninety-six, marking a significant era in the history of Normandy.

Commissioned by Richard, Dudo of Saint-Quentin chronicled the life and deeds of the early dukes of Normandy in his work, "De moribus et actis primorum Normanniae ducum." While Dudo referred to Richard as a dux, this title may have been more reflective of his military prowess rather than an official designation of nobility.

Richard's influence on the region was profound; he is credited with either introducing or significantly expanding the system of feudalism in Normandy. By the conclusion of his reign, the landscape of landholding had transformed, with the most prominent Norman landholders managing their estates under feudal tenure.
