Richard Keogh, born on August 11, 1986, in England, is a distinguished professional football coach and former player, currently serving as the assistant head coach at Barnsley. His career as a player was marked by versatility, primarily occupying the centre-back position while also demonstrating his skills as a right-back.
Keogh's football journey began as a trainee at Ipswich Town and Stoke City, where he made his professional debut on loan at the Icelandic club Víkingur in 2004. He transitioned to Bristol City in 2005 on a free transfer, making his Football League debut that September. His early years at Bristol saw him score his first goal in April 2006, and he became a regular starter the following season, contributing four goals in 43 appearances.
After a challenging 2007–08 season, which included loan spells at Huddersfield Town, Carlisle United, and Cheltenham Town, Keogh joined Carlisle United for an undisclosed fee. He quickly established himself as a key player, making 95 appearances and scoring six goals, earning the club's Player of the Year Award for the 2009–10 season. His next move was to Coventry City, where he continued to impress, playing 95 matches and scoring once, while also being named Player of the Year for the 2011–12 season.
In July 2012, Keogh signed for Derby County for a fee exceeding one million pounds, where he became a stalwart, featuring in 356 matches over eight seasons. His accolades at Derby included two Player of the Year Awards and three Players' Player of the Year Awards, alongside a place in the 2014–15 PFA Team of the Year. After leaving Derby, he had stints with Milton Keynes Dons, Huddersfield Town, Blackpool, and a brief return to Ipswich Town before concluding his playing career at Forest Green Rovers in 2024.
Despite being born in England, Keogh has strong Irish roots, representing the Republic of Ireland at under-19, under-21, and senior levels, showcasing his international prowess throughout his career.
