Richard Martin West

Richard Martin West, born on February tenth, nineteen forty-one, is a distinguished Danish astronomer and university educator. With a remarkable career spanning several decades, he has made significant contributions to the field of astronomy, particularly during his tenure at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

West is renowned for his discovery of numerous comets, most notably Comet West (C/1975 V1), which captivated skywatchers as one of the brightest comets of the nineteen seventies. His expertise also led to the identification of periodic comets, including 76P/West–Kohoutek–Ikemura and 123P/West–Hartley, further solidifying his reputation in the astronomical community.

In addition to his work with comets, West is credited by the Minor Planet Center with the discovery of forty minor planets between nineteen seventy-six and nineteen eighty-six. Among these are the Trojan asteroids 2146 Stentor and 2148 Epeios, showcasing his diverse talents in celestial discovery. Furthermore, he collaborated with Hans-Emil Schuster to co-discover the Phoenix Dwarf galaxy, adding another significant achievement to his illustrious career.
