Richard Montgomery

Richard Montgomery, born on December second, seventeen thirty-eight, was an Irish-born military officer who played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. Raised in Ireland within an Ulster-Scots family, he began his military career in the British Army, where he served during the French and Indian War. His experiences in North America and the West Indies allowed him to rise steadily through the ranks.

In seventeen fifty-four, Montgomery enrolled at Trinity College Dublin, and by seventeen fifty-six, he had joined the British Army. After his service in the French and Indian War, he was stationed at Fort Detroit during Pontiac's War. Following health issues, he returned to Britain but made his way back to the Thirteen Colonies in seventeen seventy-three, where he married Janet Livingston and took up farming.

With the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Montgomery aligned himself with the Patriot cause, being elected to the New York Provincial Congress in May seventeen seventy-five. By June of the same year, he was commissioned as a Brigadier General in the Continental Army. When Philip Schuyler fell ill, Montgomery took command of the invasion of Quebec, successfully capturing Fort St. Jean and Montreal in November.

On December thirty-first, seventeen seventy-five, Montgomery led an attack on Quebec City, where he met his untimely death during the battle. The British forces honored him with a respectful burial, and in eighteen eighteen, his remains were relocated to New York City, ensuring his legacy would be remembered.
