Richard Myers, born on March first, nineteen forty-two, is a distinguished retired United States Air Force general who held the esteemed position of the fifteenth chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In this role, he was the highest-ranking uniformed officer in the U.S. military, providing critical military advice to the president, the secretary of defense, and the National Security Council during pivotal moments, including the early stages of the war on terror and the planning of the two thousand three invasion of Iraq.
Myers' tenure as chairman began on October first, two thousand one, and he served until his retirement on September thirtieth, two thousand five, when he was succeeded by General Peter Pace.
