Richard Neal, born on February fourteenth, nineteen forty-nine, is a prominent American politician who has represented Massachusetts's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since nineteen eighty-nine. Initially serving in what was then the 2nd district until two thousand thirteen, Neal's constituency includes the cities of Springfield, West Springfield, Pittsfield, Holyoke, Agawam, Chicopee, and Westfield, characterized by its more rural landscape compared to the rest of the state.

A member of the Democratic Party, Neal has held the esteemed position of dean of Massachusetts's congressional delegation since two thousand thirteen, as well as the dean of the New England House delegations. His political career began locally, where he served as the president of the Springfield City Council from nineteen seventy-nine to nineteen eighty-three, followed by his tenure as mayor of Springfield from nineteen eighty-three to nineteen eighty-nine.

Neal's influence in Congress has been significant; he chaired the House Ways and Means Committee from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty-three and led the Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures. His dedication to U.S.–Ireland relations and the Northern Ireland peace process has earned him numerous accolades, highlighting his commitment to international diplomacy. In January two thousand twenty, he was honored with induction into the Irish American Hall of Fame.
