Richard Price

Richard Price, born on February twenty-third, seventeen twenty-three, in Llangeinor, Wales, was a multifaceted intellectual whose contributions spanned philosophy, theology, mathematics, and politics. As a Welsh moral philosopher and Nonconformist minister, he dedicated much of his life to the Newington Green Unitarian Church, located on the outskirts of London, where he became a prominent figure in the religious and intellectual community.

Price was not only a preacher but also a political reformer and pamphleteer, actively engaging in radical, republican, and liberal causes, including the French and American Revolutions. His well-connected network included influential figures such as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, George Washington, Mirabeau, and the Marquis de Condorcet, showcasing his role as a bridge between revolutionary ideas and prominent leaders of his time.

In addition to his theological and political endeavors, Price made significant contributions to mathematics and actuarial science. He is credited with editing and developing the Bayes–Price theorem, which has had a lasting impact on the field. His writings also addressed important issues in demography and finance, further solidifying his reputation as a thinker of great depth and insight.

Recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society, Price's intellectual legacy is profound. Historian John Davies hailed him as 'the greatest Welsh thinker of all time,' a testament to his enduring influence on philosophy and social reform.
