Richard Stallman

Richard Stallman, born on March 16, 1953, is a prominent figure in the world of computer science, known for his groundbreaking contributions as a programmer, engineer, and activist. In September 1983, he initiated the GNU Project with the ambitious goal of creating a Unix-like operating system entirely composed of free software, thereby launching the free software movement.

Stallman's influence is evident in his development of key software tools, including the GNU C Compiler (GCC), GNU Emacs, and the GNU Debugger. His work on the GNU General Public License (GPL) has made it the most widely used free software license, embodying the principles of copyleft, which ensures the rights to use, modify, and distribute software.

In 1989, he co-founded the League for Programming Freedom, advocating against software patents and digital rights management, which he critiques as misleading. His commitment to free software has shaped the landscape of software development and user rights since the mid-1990s.

Despite stepping down as president of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) in September 2019 amid controversy, Stallman continues to lead the GNU Project and returned to the FSF board in 2021, reaffirming his dedication to the principles of free software.
