Richard Teichmann

Richard Teichmann, born on December twenty-fourth, eighteen sixty-eight, was a distinguished German chess master and composer. He earned the nickname "Richard the Fifth" due to his frequent fifth-place finishes in various tournaments. Despite this, his prowess was undeniable, as evidenced by his remarkable victory in Karlsbad in nineteen eleven, where he decisively defeated renowned players Akiba Rubinstein and Carl Schlechter using the same line of the Ruy Lopez.

Teichmann's talent did not go unnoticed; the legendary José Raúl Capablanca regarded him as "one of the finest players in the world." His skills and strategic insights were further celebrated by Edward Lasker, who recounted an amusing demonstration of Teichmann's victory over Schlechter in his book, "Chess Secrets I Learned from the Masters." Lasker admired Teichmann's mastery and contributions to the game.

Throughout his chess career, Teichmann faced significant challenges due to chronic eye trouble, which ultimately limited his participation in some events. Notably, he had only one eye, and this condition forced him to withdraw from the nineteen ninety-nine London Tournament after just four rounds.
