Richard Zare

Richard Zare, born on November nineteenth, nineteen thirty-nine, is a distinguished chemist and university educator, currently serving as the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science and a Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University. His career has been marked by significant contributions to the fields of physical chemistry and analytical chemistry, particularly through his pioneering work in laser-induced fluorescence (LIF).

LIF is a highly sensitive technique that has found applications across various disciplines, including analytical chemistry, molecular biology, and even astrophysics. Notably, one of its groundbreaking applications was in the sequencing of the human genome, showcasing Zare's impact on both science and society.

Beyond his research, Zare is celebrated for his passion for science and his commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists. He has guided over one hundred fifty PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, with a commendable focus on inclusivity, as more than forty-nine of his mentees are women or members of minority groups.
