Richard John Hatton, born on October 6, 1978, was a celebrated British professional boxer known for his tenacity and charisma in the ring. Competing from 1997 to 2012, he earned the affectionate nicknames 'The Hitman', 'The Pride of Hyde', and the 'People's Champion'. His career was marked by significant achievements, including multiple world championships in the light-welterweight division and one in welterweight.
Hatton's rise to prominence began in 2000 when he captured the British light welterweight title, followed by the World Boxing Union title the next year. He made an impressive fifteen successful defenses of the WBU title from 2001 to 2004. The pinnacle of his career came in 2005 when he defeated Kostya Tszyu, claiming the International Boxing Federation, Ring, and lineal titles, and later that year, he added the World Boxing Association title to his accolades, becoming a unified light-welterweight world champion.
In 2006, Hatton made his welterweight debut, winning a hard-fought battle against WBA champion Luis Collazo. However, his journey was not without setbacks; he faced his first career defeat against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007, followed by another loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2009. These defeats took a toll on his mental and physical well-being, leading to a long hiatus from the sport.
After announcing his retirement in 2011, Hatton made a brief comeback in 2012, only to face a loss to Vyacheslav Senchenko, prompting him to retire for good. Despite remaining out of the ring for thirteen years, he announced a comeback in July 2025 but tragically passed away before he could return to boxing. His legacy as one of the most beloved British boxers endures, highlighted by his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2024.
