Rigobert Song, born on July first, nineteen seventy-six, is a distinguished Cameroonian former professional footballer and current manager of the Central African Republic national team. Renowned for his defensive prowess, Song primarily played as a centre-back but was also versatile enough to operate as a right-back. His international career is marked by an impressive record of participating in eight Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, where he captained the team in five of them, a remarkable achievement in itself.
Throughout his illustrious career, Song has made a significant impact on the African football scene, winning two CAF Africa Cup of Nations titles in the years two thousand and two thousand two. He holds the record for the most consecutive games played in the tournament, with thirty-five appearances. Additionally, with one hundred thirty-seven caps, he is the most capped player in the history of the Cameroon national team and has represented his country in four World Cups: nineteen ninety-four, nineteen ninety-eight, two thousand two, and two thousand ten.
Song began his professional journey with Metz, where he contributed to the club's victory in the Coupe de la Ligue in nineteen ninety-six. After his stint at the 1998 World Cup, he transitioned to Salernitana in Italy's Serie A. His career then took him to prominent clubs such as Liverpool, West Ham United, and 1. FC Köln, before returning to France to play for Lens until two thousand four. His next chapter unfolded in Turkey with Galatasaray, where he secured two Süper Lig titles and the Turkish Cup, followed by a contract with Trabzonspor, where he won another Turkish Cup before retiring in two thousand ten.
Notably, aside from Zinedine Zidane, Song is one of the few players to have been sent off in two different World Cups, first against Brazil in nineteen ninety-four and then against Chile in nineteen ninety-eight. He also holds the record as the youngest player ever to be sent off in a World Cup at the tender age of seventeen. Known affectionately as 'Big Chief' by Turkish fans, he is also the uncle of fellow Cameroonian defensive midfielder Alex Song and rugby league player Junior Nsemba.
